As you start to build your clothing line, you might be wondering if there are any common mistakes new designers make when sampling. And most importantly, how to avoid them!
When you go into the sample development process you want:
- Your samples to be completed as quickly as possible
- For the best price possible
- With the best quality possible
Over the course of my career, I have overseen the development of thousands of samples. And, while it is SO exciting to see your vision come to life, there are a lot of things that can go wrong.
Knowing how to watch out for them before they catch you off guard will give you an advantage. Stop, stumbling around in the dark and watch the video to prepare for the sample making process.
So what are the common mistakes new designers make when sampling?
-
One | Not using enough visuals
-
Two | Not having all your materials ready
-
Three | Not being clear on how your style “should” fit
-
Four | Not factoring in shipping costs
-
Five | Not understanding how long it REALLY takes
In the video, I also reference Alvanon. They are a great source for getting industry standard measurements for when you’re just starting out. They also have dress forms that you can order when you are farther along (they can be pricey!).
I also discussed how important it is to get the right thread for your product. Check out the industry leaders:
