Using Your Values To Set Goals You’re Destined to Achieve

Part One | Values

Hi friend – this is the first in our series on goal setting. As an entrepreneur you are getting up to big things and you want to make sure you are staying on the right track and going for the things that really matter. That’s why it’s so important that your using your values to set goals. This way you won’t end end up down a road and realize we are on someone else’s journey.

So let’s do this, step by step. What is important to you? What do you want to achieve? And finally, the secret that I have found to actually making those dreams a reality.

First things first, lets look at your personal values. Where do you focus your time? What is important to you as a person? Do you have young children that still need a lot of your time and attention? Do you value adventure and travel? Are you inspired by nature, the city, your dog?

It is important to clearly identify your unique values so that you are able to build goals that support them.

Without doing this step, I have seen people create goals that they think sound good but are not aligned with their current values. Then they are constantly frustrated by their inability to achieve those goals.

A personal example of this was when I set a goal to be managing a large team of people at my last company. As I built my career I saw the inevitable next step being a promotion and more people to manage. The reality was, I had two small children and although I loved the work, I gave more value to the flexibility of working from home then I did the prestige of a bigger title. It took me some time to realize that my values had shifted and with that, my goals needed to shift.

Now that I am clear that family, creation, problem solving and being in nature are some of my core values, I am able to build goals that support them.

Not only will I be more likely to achieve these goals but I will also love the journey so much more.

I’ve created a simple worksheet inspired by the complete quiz from Dr.Demartini. Either head over and do the quiz, or you can download my worksheet for FREE. And remember, values can shift over time so if this is something you have done before it could have shifted. It’s all part of the journey.

Once you have finished this piece of work, take some time to reflect on what you discovered.

I found it really helpful to talk through my findings with my close friends and my husband. It was quite the aha for me and it was important for the people that I cared about most to understand that I was looking at my life in a new way and that I needed their support in heading in a new direction.

I also covered this topic in my a Facebook Live in my private Facebook Group.

I would love to hear what you found. Was this exercise helpful? Was there anything that surprised you? Can you see how this might support you in building more meaningful goals? Share your thoughts below and get ready for my next post, putting those goals on paper.
